The Initiative - Relapse prevention plan (Part two)

Environmental factors in relapse prevention.

How are you feeling today?

As a continuation from what we were discussing yesterday it would be good practice to expand on our relapse prevention plan by looking at the environmental factors that surround us on a daily basis.

Today you are going to work on discovering areas within your environment that are good for your recovery and the areas that are not good.

We will also be looking at what changes you could make regarding these factors and also to enhance your health and wellbeing.

Grab your pen and journal and write these questions down with your answers:

My current environment

  • The people I spend most of my time with...
  • The qualities those people offer which give me strength...
  • The traits those people have that drain my strength...
  • Where do I spend most of my time...
  • What about that place gives me strength...
  • What about that place drains my strength...

Activities I engage in

  • These activities give me strength...
  • These activities leave me feeling drained...

Recovery environment I desire

  • These are the qualities of the people I would like to surround myself with...
  • The environment I would like to spend my time in is...
  • The activities I would like to engage in are...

So far, we have looked at your current environment and what you would desire in the future.

Now I want you to think about what steps you can take to make these improvements.

  • Where and how can I meet people that I would like to have in my life, that will be positive for my recovery?
  • Where do I want to spend more of my time and what can I do to make that happen?
  • What activities do I want to engage in and what steps can I take to begin these?

The idea behind this is to get you focused on setting some future goals that will enhance your life and assist you in moving forward on your sober journey.

By starting to think about these things and making yourself aware you can begin to think about what stepping stones you can make towards making these positive changes in your life.

While also becoming aware of what factors in your environment may cause you difficulty or obstacles in your recovery.
